Rawshan asks speaker not to take Quader’s letter into account
Jatiya Party co-chairperson Rawshan Ershad on Wednesday sent a letter to speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury requesting her not to take into account the letter of GM Quader issued on Tuesday seeking his appointment as leader of the opposition in parliament as the successor of HM Ershad.
After an emergency meeting of the party lawmakers and senior leaders known loyal to her, Rawshan, also deputy leader of the opposition in parliament, decided to officially inform the speaker that Quader’s letter did not follow parliamentary procedure and did not reflect the opinion of the party’s parliamentary party.
Lawmakers Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Fakhrul Imam, who attended the meeting at Rawshan’s Gulshan home on Wednesday, said that all the leaders present at the meeting observed that Quader’s letter did not follow the rules of business.
‘As per the procedure, being the second largest party in the parliament Jatiya Party’s parliamentary party in its meeting will decide the leader of the opposition. No such meeting was held after Ershad’s death,’ said Fakhrul Imam adding that the meeting would be held on September 8 when the fourth session of the 11th parliament would begin.
Fakhrul said Rawshan in her letter to the speaker also mentioned Quader as acting chairman of the party.
GM Quader in his requested the speaker to appoint him leader of the opposition claiming that he got unanimous support of the party presidium members and majority of the party lawmakers.
Quader sent the letter on the day when Ershad-Rawshan couple’s son Rahgir Al Mahi Shad Ershad bought nomination form for Rangpur 3 constituency by-election.
