Action taken against Rohingyas collecting passports

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Friday said legal action has been taken against those Rohingyas who attempted to obtain Bangladeshi passports using fake identities.

The home minister came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after a get-together event of SSC candidates-2000 at KIB auditorium in the capital.

Asked how Rohingyas getting passports, the minister said they have already started identifying the Rohingyas trying to obtain passports using fake information.

Even the process of issuing passports against identified Rohingya people has already been stopped, Asaduzzaman said.

Legal action is being taken against those Rohingyas who are trying to get passport using fake names and fake birth registration certificates, he said adding some of them have already been arrested.

About restriction on mobile phone use by Rohingyas, the minister said the authorities concerned are yet to comply with the order of stopping

mobile network in Teknaf and Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar district due to some complications.

If the mobile network is shut there, Bangladeshi people in Teknaf and Ukhia will not be able to use mobile phones, he said.

“So, Rohingya people in the camps have been instructed not to use mobile phones. Legal action will be taken if anyone uses mobile phone defying the order,” he added.

The Home Minister said the authorities have already started work to identify those from whom Ruhingyas collect mobile phones and SIM cards.

On September 2, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission to take immediate steps to stop mobile phone services at Rohingya camps.

Following the order, the BTRC issued a directive to all the mobile phone operators to stop the sale of SIM cards and mobile phone services at Rohingya camps within seven days.

The notice was issued following allegations of providing mobile phone services to Rohingyas through SIM card sale by mobile phone operators defying a government ban.

The government imposed a ban on SIM card sale to Rohingyas who fled Mayanmar amid persecution there by the military.
