JU VC asks chancellor, UGC to probe graft allegation
Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor Farzana Islam on Saturday called on the university’s chancellor and the University Grants Commission to probe the allegation of corruption brought against her, particularly giving away university’s fund to leaders of the university unit Chhatra League.
She came with the new statement at a news conference at her resident where she condemned the latest letter circulated by the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami league’s student wing, where they claimed she had given Tk 1 crore 60 lakh to the university unit Chhatra League.
Farzana branded allegation brought against her fictitious story and challenged Chhatra League president Rezwanul Huq Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani to prove the allegation.
Citing recent scandals by Chhatra League president and general secretary in formation of committees at Islamic University, Dhaka University and Jagannath University, the vice-chancellor said, ‘Unluckily I was the last person who disclosed their bad practice. When I shared it with prime minister Sheikh Hasina, she replied me that they disturbed you too!’
‘Chhatra League central president and secretary came to my home to get their share of money and they demand the four to six per cent of the project cost as commission and asked me to collect the amount share from the contractors. I rejected their proposal and that’s why they spread false news about me,’ she said.
About the recent protest against her, she said, ‘Some teachers’ factions are desperate to prove me as corrupt. I ask them to go for inquiry and reveal the truth.’
However, a faction of teachers ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chatanay Biswasi Pragatishil Shikkhak Samaj’ in a press release demanded resignation of the vice chancellor.
Referring the latest letter of BCL president and general secretary to the prime minister, the teachers group said it proved that the vice-chancellor and her family was involved in corruption.
The teachers group also claimed the vice-chancellor lost moral ground to stay in office and cited previous allegation of corruption against her husband.
The Jahangirnagar University unit Chhatra League, meanwhile, in a press release on Friday said the claims of organisation’s central president and general secretary that the vice-chancellor had given Tk 1.6 crore to the unit was ‘false and fabricated’.
None of Chhatra League president Rezwanul or general secretary Rabbani was available for their comments on the claim of the organisation’s university unit.
The controversy deepened as Chhatra League central president and secretary’s letter to the prime minister claimed that the vice-chancellor’s husband and son used university unit Chhatra League and took huge amounts of money from the contractors and they gave Tk 1.6 crore to university unit Chhatra League on August 8.
