Khaleda kept in jail to be killed: Fakhrul

BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhru Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the government was keeping their party chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail to kill her in a planned way as part of political vengeance.

Addressing a human chain, formed by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Muktijodhdha Dal in front of  the National Press Club demanding Khaleda’s release, he also alleged that the government had taken the path of persecution to continue their rule.

‘The government has no relation with the people. That is why the government used the state machinery to rob votes at the night prior to the election day to grab power and continue their rule,’ he said.

Mentioning that the government had lodged some one lakh cases against about 26 lakh BNP leaders and activists, he said that he did not know whether any political party in the history of the world had to endure such oppression.

‘The government has destroyed democracy, the democratic institutions and is trying to make the judiciary partisan. They have made the administration partisan, are trying to make the media partisan and has had become successful to a large extent,’ he said.

He went on that people were now afraid of expressing their opinion in fear of the fascists.

‘If they speak out they may have to face abduction or cases,’ he said.

‘It’s true that politicians are not controlling politics right now. Different “ street organisations” and agencies control the [country’s] politics. This is a reality of this time,’ he lamented.

He emphasised that all should unite to stand against this situation and to free Khaleda and democracy.

Referring to media reports quoting the removed Chhatra League general secretary, Golam Rabbani, he said that the BCL leaders termed the money they demanded as toll from a Jahangirnagar University project as their ‘fair share’, he said that the name of university’s vice-chancellor Farzana Islam also surfaced in the ‘fair share’ scheme.

‘The VC should resign or should be sacked right now,’ he said, adding that the Dhaka University VC, too, admitted students to the university at night without admission test.

The government, by removing the two BCL leaders, has recognised that corruption was continuing, he said.

He demanded dissolution of the present parliament and a new election under a neutral government to form new parliament with the (genuine) representatives of the people.

Referring to the publication of India’s NRC in Assam dropping the names of 19 lakh people and BJP leaders’ warning that these people would be sent to Bangladesh, he took a swipe at yesterday’s comment of a Bangladesh minister that they wanted to believe India.

‘We are anxious. We condemn the submissive foreign policy. We condemn this type of mentality,’ he said.

Presided over by Jatiyatabadi Muktijodhdha Dal vice-president Mizanur Rahman, the human chain was also addressed by BNP chairperson’s advisor Fazlur Rahman and BNP joint secretary-general Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others.
