DU ENROLMENT CONTROVERSY BCL attacks protesters seeking resignation of VC, dean

Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Wednesday swopped on protesters seeking resignation of Dhaka University vice-chancellor and its business studies faculty dean as they allowed 34 Chhatra League leaders to enroll in a master’s course to ensure their candidature in its student union polls.

The Chhatra League activists carried out the attack at noon when the protesters were trying to lay siege to the office of business studies faculty dean they hold him responsible for the ‘illegal enrolment’ dodging admission tests.

Asif Mahmud, a second year student of linguistics department and also an activist Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council, was injured during the attack. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with wounds on his face.

The students were staging demonstration under the banner ‘Dhaka University against Scam and Corruption’, demanding resignation of vice-chancellor M Akhtaruzzman and business faculty dean Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam for giving privilege to 34 Chhatra League leaders to get admitted to master’s of tax management course under the banking and insurance department. Eight of the enrolled students were elected as office bearers of the university’s central students union. 

One of the protesters Shrobona Shafique Dipti said, ‘Chhatra League activists, under the banner of general students took position inside the business studies faculty and carried out the attack during our pre scheduled program.’

Followers of Chhatra League’s DU unit president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hussain were seen during the attack including Chhatra League central committee member Mahfuzur Rahman Imon, and Surya Sen Hall unit member Sabbir Hossain Shovon.

Both Sanjit and Saddam denied the allegations and claimed that Chhatra League activists did not attack anyone.

After the attack, the protesters went to the proctor’s office to inform him of the attack but he was not in the office. Then they besieged the business studies faculty dean office for about two hours demanding exemplary punishment of the attackers.

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union vice-president Nurul Haque Nur expressed solidarity with the protesting students. ‘The ruling party’s student body carried out the attack on general students as they made some logical demands,’ he said and demanded exemplary punishment to the attackers.
