Dengue patients still double outside Dhaka

At least 536 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in last 24 hours ending at 8AM Wednesday.

Of them, 175 were hospitalised in Dhaka and 361 in other parts of the country, according to Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of Directorate General of Health Services.

On Wednesday at least 2,360 dengue patients were under treatment at hospitals across the country, 927 in the capital and 1,433 in the districts.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research received reports of 203 suspected dengue deaths.

Aedes mosquitoes live mostly in and around urban habitats and breed in clean water filled containers like abandoned cans, pots, cups, flower tubs, coconut shells and tyres at and  around homes.

Unlike other mosquitoes, aedes bites during the daytime. Its peak biting period is two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.

This year dengue infection witnessed an unprecedented rise.

The dengue outbreak initially remained confined to the capital, as had been the case since the first dengue occurrence was reported in 2000.

This year, dengue infection spread outside the capital in the fourth week of July.

Dengue infection spread throughout Bangladesh in the first week of August where it got more severe than in the capital since August 8.

IEDCR said dengue was spreading in rural areas through Aedes albopictus while Aedes aegypti was responsible for spreading the infection in the urban areas.
