Maldives bans Bangladeshi worker recruitments
The Maldives has banned worker recruitments from Bangladesh for one year from September 18.
It imposed the ban to curb the number of undocumented expatriate workers in the island republic.
The country’s Immigration Department revealed that 63,000 workers of Bangladesh were residing in the Maldives illegally, reported Male daily, The Edition.
When asked, Bangladesh labours attaché in Male TKM Moshfiqur Rahman told New Age Thursday that the Maldives imposed restrictions on hiring workers from Bangladesh.
He said that over one lakh Bangladeshi workers were currently working in the Maldives and a large number of them were undocumented.
He also said that a Memorandum of Understanding on manpower recruitment was under negotiation between the two countries.
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport officials said that nearly 1,000 deported Bangladeshi workers came back from the Maldives in last six months.
According to a report published by The Edition, on Wednesday, that the Bangladeshi immigrants exceeded the assigned quota of 1.50 lakh.
The Maldives government said that for the specified duration, migrant workers could be brought from countries other than Bangladesh.
The Maldives government said that there was no restriction on hiring professionals of Bangladesh.
The decision was made by a task force appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday to find a solution to the undocumented expatriate workers in the Maldives.
A racket of brokers sent many workers to the Maldives on tourist visas charging each between Tk 2.5 lakh to three lakh and they became undocumented on expiry of their tourist visas.
