Government becomes hard on Juba Legaue after BCL: PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that the ruling Awami League as well as the government became hard on Juba League, the AL-backed youth body, after the party-backed student organisation Chhatra League.

‘Social anomalies have to be removed and we’ll not tolerate clashes and killing over casinos,’ she told a delegation of Bangladesh Chhatra League that called on her at her Ganabhaban residence.

Prime minister’s deputy press secretary Hasan Jahid Tusher made the discloser at a briefing after the meeting.

The prime minister said that she was developing the country through hard work. ‘But I’ll not allow any black spot to be put on it. I’ll not spare any wrongdoer,’ she said.

Hasina said that the government would investigate how the foreigners came with casino and how they got visas. ‘If anybody tries to obstruct this work, he or she will be dealt with iron hands,’ she said.

The prime minister suggested the Chhatra League leaders and activists to earn confidence and trust of the people. The Chhatra League leaders greeted the prime minister by presenting her with a bouquet.

Earlier on September 14, Awami League president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina removed Chhatra League president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury and general secretary Golam Rabbani following an allegation that they demanded a ‘4–6 per cent commission’ from a Tk 1,445-crore project at Jahangirnagar University. A 6 per cent commission on the project fund would be Tk 86 crore.

Chhatra League first vice-president Al Nahian Khan Joy and first joint general secretary Lekhok Bhattacharya were appointed its acting president and general secretary respectively.
