JCD rallies protesting at assault

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s associate body of students Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on Tuesday went out on demonstrations at Dhaka University protesting against the Chhatra League activists’ attack on them on Monday.

Students of mass communication and journalism department and Dhaka University Journalists Association demanded permanent expulsion of the activists of Chhatra League who assaulted three journalists on Monday when they were performing their professional duties.

At least 12 Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and three Dhaka University correspondents of different media outlets were injured as Bangladesh Chhatra League activists swooped on them

Around 200 leaders of Chhatra Dal brought out a procession on the campus and paraded several streets of the campus. Later, they submitted a written complaint with the university proctor Golam Rabbani demanding justice.

Proctor Golam Rabbani said that university administration would investigate into the incident and action would be taken if anyone found guilty.

Talking to media at Madhu’s canteen, Chhatra Dal general secretary Iqbal Hossain said they wanted peaceful co-existence but Chhatra League activists repeatedly carried out attacks on them.

Chhatra League acting president Al Nahian Khan Joy claimed that it was a factional clash between Chhatra Dal activists and rejected the allegation that Chhatra League carried out the attack.

Meanwhile, journalism department students gave a three-day ultimatum to the university authority to suspend the students and threatened that they would go for tougher movement, if the authority did not meet their demand within the deadline.

They made the demand from a human chain held in front of the university’s central library.

They also demanded ensuring freedom of the press on the campus.

The Dhaka University Journalist Association in a statement condemned the attack on journalists and issued 24-hour ultimatum to punish the attackers, otherwise, they threatened to wage tougher movement.

On Monday, Chhatra League activists assaulted three journalists—Anisur Rahman of Students Journal, Rahatul Islam Rafee of Dainik Pratidiner Bangladesh, and Afsar Munna of Dainik Business Bangladesh.
