ACC calls for info on SUVs, owners

The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday sent a letter to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority asking for information about private luxury vehicles of 2500cc and above registered in last five years.

The commission sent the letter to BRTA at a time when law enforcement agencies were conducting drives against gambling centres and bars and arresting ruling Awami League’s leaders allegedly for making huge money out of these illegal businesses.

In the ACC letter signed by its director general for special investigation ANM AL Feroz sent to BRTA chairman the commission asked to provide information of engine and chassis numbers, model, dates of import, registration number and dates, prices, VAT documents and other taxes, names and addresses of owners of those vehicles.

According to ACC officials the commission would look for source of income of the owners of the cars or jeeps.

They said that the intelligence unit of the commission found that a good number of politicians, bureaucrats and businesspeople imported lavish cars and jeeps spending a huge amount of money.

The intelligence unit suspected that there were some inconsistencies between the lifestyle and legal income of the users of these Sports Utility Vehicles in the country.

On September 18, the Rapid Action Battalion raided at a bar-cum-gambling centre in Fakirapul area in the capital and arrested its owner Awami Juba League city south unit organising secretary Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan.

Later, police also joined the crackdown which now continues and also extended to cities outside Dhaka.
