Gopalganj Univ Unrest 2 more assistant proctors resign as protest continues

Two more assistant proctors of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Gopalganj stepped down extending support to the ongoing demonstration of students demanding removal of its vice-chancellor Khondokar Nasiruddin.

Besides, the University Grant Commission committee to probe the student  unrest at the university left Gopalganj on Thursday after collecting necessary documents and statements of the parties concerned including the vice-chancellor and several protesters.

The students continued their demonstration on the day for the ninth straight day demanding removal of the vice-chancellor for his alleged involvement in corruption, misuse of power, autocratic behaviour, sexual harassment of female students and other irregularities.

UGC member Alamgir Hossain, head of the probe committee, told reporters that they understood the situation at the university and hoped to solve the problem immediately.

Assistant proctors Tarikul Islam and Nazmul Haque Shahin resigned from their post. Tarikul said they resigned for the silent role of university authorities about the attack on students on September 21.

Another assistant proctor Humayun Kabir resigned from his post immediate after the students were attacked by a group reportedly backed by the vice-chancellor on September 21.

On Thursday, protesters brought out a silent procession blindfolding themselves.

About stepping down of three assistant proctors, the university’s acting proctor Bashir Uddin told New Age that allegation brought by them were baseless as he tried to give his best effort to help students who were injured in the attack. He also said any assistant proctor of total 18 could resign anytime on their personal grounds.

On the other hand, the university’s probe committee on September 21’s attack on Thursday submitted its report with the authorities.

The three-member committee chief Abdur Rahim Khan said they suggested the authorities to file a general diary with police over the issue alleging that the students did not co-operate with probe body as had lack of lack of trust in it.

Arabindu Biswas, father of Argha Biswas, a student of Computer Science and Engineering Department who committed suicide in 2017 allegedly for the misbehaviour of Khondokar Nasiruddin also joined the demonstrators on Thursday.

The authorities on September 21 closed the university until October 3 but the protesters continued their demonstrations refusing to leave the campus as ordered.

Meanwhile, left-leaning Bangladesh Chhatra Federation at a news conference at Dhaka University on Thursday demanded the removal of the vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University Gopalganj alleging that he was using draconian law at the university.

They also demanded penalty of the Dhaka University vice-chancellor and others responsible who allowed admission of the leaders of the ruling Awami League student body Bangladesh Chhatra League dodging the intake examinations.
