BNP asks district units to hold council sessions by Sept 30
Bangladesh Nationalist Party has asked its district units to constitute new committees through council sessions by September 30 as part of the reorganisation of the party.
The party gave the instruction in a letter sent to the president and secretary or convener and member secretary of the 75 organisational districts on Saturday, party sources said.
It warned that the central BNP would make decisions on the district unit who would miss the deadline.
‘The letter contains some directives of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and the district units were asked to follow them properly,’ BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu told New Age on Wednesday.
The tenure of the committees in most districts already expired and those district units will have to reconstitute the committees through council sessions, the sources said.
The letter, signed by BNP joint secretary general Mohammad Shahjahan, also asked the district units to form new committees of district, thana, upazila and municipal units as per the party constitution, party leaders said.
The letter asked the district unit leaders to consider the performance of leaders in the anti-government movement, especially in the non-stop blockade and in resisting the January 5, 2014 elections boycotted by all opposition parties, in reconstituting the committees, the party leaders said.
Narsingdi district BNP president Khairul Kabir Khokon said that he heard about the letter and hoped that he would get the letter soon and work accordingly.
A city unit president, who was also yet to receive the letter, the central committee needed to be reconstituted as it failed to perform in the movement.
Mohammad Shahjahan was not available for comments.
Acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is now abroad for medical treatment.
Khaleda Zia at a recent programme function at her Gulshan office stressed on inducting BNP men who were active in the past movement and ready to sacrifice life in future movement into the party leadership.
She also said that young generation should be inducted into the leadership and elderly leaders who became physically weak because of old age might be made members of advisory council.
The BNP chairperson also said that no committee would be imposed from Dhaka.
The tenure of most of the committees of BNP and its associate organisations at field level across the country expired, the party leaders said.
BNP could not yet form full-fledged committees in a number of districts and metropolitan cities since its last national council held in 2009.
The district and city units now run by either convening or partial committees include Naogaon, Chuadanga, Satkhira, Chittagong city, Chittagong district (north), Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur, Sylhet city and district, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Barisal district (south), Manikganj, Netrokona, Mymensingh north and Dhaka city, said BNP central office sources.
