2 Mahjong gambling tools seized

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate officials on Thursday seized two automatic Mahjong tables used for gambling during a raid on a hostel operated by a Chinese national in Dhaka's Uttara area.

Mahjong is a tile-based game developed in China, said customs intelligence director general M Shahidul Islam.

He said that the agency conducted the drive on the hostel of Chinese citizen Kent, who also operated a restaurant named Hobnob Coffee House and another Chinese restaurant at sector-13 in Uttara.

Kent took the tables to his hostel when the law enforcers launched a crackdown on illegal casinos recently, the official said.

According to the agency findings, Nenad Trade International dodged around Tk 2,85,000 in taxes when it imported seven Mahjong tables in 2018 and sold them to different individuals and organisations.

Earlier on Sunday and Monday, the agency seized four Mahjong machine from a poultry feed factory named New Hope Agrotech Bangladesh Ltd in Munshiganj, an easy-bike battery factory named Dongjin Longevity Industry Ltd and Best Tycoon Enterprise in Narayanganj.
