PM expresses outrage over Abrar killing

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday expressed outrage over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on early Monday.

At an unscheduled meeting at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the prime minister, Tuesday evening Hasina, also the ruling Awami League president, expressed her dissatisfaction over the university vice-chancellor Saiful Islam’s delay in meeting the protesting students even after the murder on the campus, meeting sources said.

They said that the prime minister was shocked on the killing after she was informed that the incident took place following a Facebook status of Abrar.

Hasina asked the acting Chhatra League president and general secretary to hold a press conference today over the matter.

Chhatra League acting general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya told reporters that they would hold a press conference at Madhu’s Canteen of Dhaka University at 11:00am today.

AL leaders said that Hasina assured that none of the Abrar killers would spared as the party would take the matter seriously.

At the meeting, Chhatra League leaders briefed the prime minister about the current student movement at BUET protesting against the killing of Abrar, they said.

Hasina asked them to ‘keep silence’ into the BUET student protests as the ruling party did not want to do politics with the incident.

She said that the people involved in the killing had already been arrested and a case was filed and the suspects were suspended from Chhatra League.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanok and Abdur Rahman, and organising secretaries AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury were present in the meeting.
