GK Shamim’s sites to be closed soon

Housing and public works minister SM Rezaul Karim on Wednesday said that GK Builders, owned by arrested Juba League leader GK Shamim, will be served notice to stop work on all its government projects within two weeks.

The minister came up with the remarks after the Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Mozammel Haque Khan submitted a 20-point recommendation at the Public Works Department.

Several government projects of GK Builders are underway and some of them remain suspended as Shamim has been arrested and his account has been frozen, he said.

The notice will seek details of the projects and fresh tender will be announced to complete the projects if necessary, the minister added.

Regarding the suggestion of ACC, Rezaul Karim said that ‘We will take measures after analysing the recommendations. No one will be spared over the corruption.’

As per the direction of the prime minister, zero tolerance over corruption will be adopted in all departments under the ministry, though it may not be possible immediately, he added.

GK Shamim, who was known as an influential contractor of Sabujbagh, Bashabo and Motijheel areas of the capital, is facing three cases under Narcotics Control Act, Money-laundering Prevention Act and Arms Act.

Shamim amassed huge wealth as a contractor identifying himself as a Juba League leader. He was arrested from his Niketan office on September 20 with illegal firearms and a huge amount of money.
