Obaidul to die for Suraiya murder

A court in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced tailor Obaidul Khan to death for murdering Suraiya Akhter Risha, class eight student of Willes Little Flower School and College, in August 2016.

In his verdict, Dhaka Metropolitan and Sessions judge KM Imrul Qayes also imposed fine of Tk 50,000 on the convict. 

Obaidul, 26, cutter of Baishakhi Ladies Tailors at Eastern Mollika Shopping Mall, Elephant Road in the capital heard the verdict from the dock.

The verdict said that Obaidul’s guilt was proved by the prosecution, beyond any shadow of doubt.

Suraiya, 14, daughter of businessman Ramzan Ali and Tania Hossain of Bangshal, Old Dhaka, was hacked  by stalker Obaidul in broad daylight on the foot- bridge adjacent to her school on August 24, 2016 after she had come out of the school after examination.

On August 28, 2016, Suraiya succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Suraiya’s mother Tania Hossain, on hearing the verdict, broke into tears and said, ‘No mother should lose her child in this way.’

Willes Little Flower School and College principal Abul Hossain expressed his satisfaction over the verdict.

Classmates and the other students of the school held demonstrations demanding death for Obaidul.

Suraiya’s mother Tania Hossain filed a case against Obaidul on August 24 under the Women and Children Repression

Prevention Act at  Ramna police station alleging that Obaidul had hacked her daughter. The lawsuit

was turned into murder case after Suraiya died on August 28.

On August 31, 2016, Obaidul was arrested at  Nilphamari.

On November 14, 2016, Ramna Police Station inspector (investigation) and also investigation officer of the case, Md Ali Hossain, submitted the charge sheet against Obaidul.

Obaidul was indicted on April 17, 2017.

During the trial, the court examined 22 prosecution witnesses.
