Jahangirnagar University protests for VC’s removal resumes

Jahangirnagar University teachers and students, who are demanding removal of vice-chancellor Farzana Islam, resumed their agitation on Tuesday, the first day after the end of Durga Puja holidays.

According to a pre-scheduled programme, agitators under the banner of Jahangirnagar against Corruption brought out a procession and held a rally in front of the administrative building in the afternooon.

Addressing the rally, Socialist Students’ Front organising secretary Shovon Rahman said they restarted their protests after their formal  application to the chancellor and the country’s president Abdul Hamid was turned down.

Bangladesh Students’ Union member Rakibul Rony complained that the vice-chancellor and her family were involved in misappropriation of university funds by giving secret commission to some Chhatra League leaders from the university’s development fund.

As some Chhatra League leaders had already admitted the fact, Farzana Islam should step aside as the vice-chancellor.

They protesters announced a protest rally for today to press their demands.

The university remained closed from October 6 to October 14 on the occasion of Durga Puja.

However, a section of the VC-backed teachers have formed a new platform named ‘Jahangirnagar against injustice and in support of development’ recently.

Organisers announce the launch at a press conference at the New Arts Faculty Building of the university.

Led by physics professor AA Mamun, 35 teachers from different departments joined the platform.

The platform will bring out a procession today and will hold a candlelight vigil and place a petition to the vice-chancellor demanding the punishment of the teachers and officers involved in corruption tomorrow.

It has been alleged that the VC managed the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) JU unit leaders with Tk 1.6 crore from the development fund. Three of the BCL activists had already confessed their involvement with the secret commission-sharing incident.
