ABRAR MURDER Amit, Tanvir on fresh remand
A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam alias Tanvir and Amit Saha on a three-day fresh remand each for further interrogation in the case over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed put the two murder accused on the fresh remand in the case as investigation officer and detective branch inspector Wahiduzzaman produced them before the court and sought another seven-day remand for each.
The court also sent another accused Hossain Mohammad Toha to jail as the IO produced him before the court after the end of his five-day police custody for quizzing.
Public Prosecutor Hemayet Uddin Hillol confirmed the matter to New Age.
Police so far arrested 20 BUET BCL leaders and activists in connection with the murder of Abrar, a second-year student at the university’s electrical and electronics engineering department , who was tortured to death at his dorm on October 7 early hours.
He was killed reportedly for his critical views on social media over the recently signed deals between Bangladesh and India.
Former Dhaka University Central Student Union leaders alleged that the ruling Awami League established a reign of terror across the country to ensure their dominance and their student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League went wild to choke the voices of dissent at the universities and colleges all over.
They observed that Abrar was a victim of rotten politics but student politics was being ‘victimised’ for BCL activities.
They were speaking at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital under the banner of ‘Former DUCSU Leaders’ on Thursday protesting against the killing of Abrar.
Addressing the human chain, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president ASM Abdur Rob said that the Bangladesh Chhatra League should be banned for killing Abrar but student politics should be allowed to be pursued independently for national interests as well as for establishing their rights.
‘Abrar Fahad was killed as he spoke for the country and its people and the brutal murder was committed in a planned way as he protested against the conspiracy to harm the interest of the country. In the murder incident, not only Abrar but the whole nation has been killed. For the liability of the murder, BCL politics should be banned,’ he said.
Nagarik Oikya convener and another former DUCSU VP Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that banning of student politics on the BUET campus following the killing of Abrar was not justified.
He said that the government was trying their best to suppress all kinds of dissent, adding that those who tried to stand against injustice became victims in their hand.
Former DUCSU VP Amanullah Aman, former DUCSU general secretary Khairul Kabir and former assistant GS Nazimuddin, among others, spoke on the occasion.
In another programme, a group of Dhaka University students under the banner of ‘Legal Seat My Right’ on Thursday demanded justice for Abrar.
At a human chain at the base of the university ‘s Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture, they also demanded legal seats for students at the dorms from the first year.
Civic body Nagarik Parishad on Thursday at another human chain in front of the National Press Club demanded that Abrar should be declared a national hero and the road between Dhaka University and BUET should be named ‘Abrar Smarani (Abrar Street)’.
BUET’s protesting students on Tuesday announced that they would boycott all sorts of academic activities until the charge sheet against the killers of Abrar was submitted and the alleged killers were permanently expelled from the university.
