One more dies of dengue

A 22-year old dengue patient died at Khulna Medical College Hospital Tuesday evening and at least 222 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours ending 8am Tuesday.

Sajib Khan, son of Shahid Khan of Putimari,  Gopalganj died at about 6:30pm.

He was admitted at about 12:30pm, said KMCH assistant registrar (medicine) Prtha Pratim Debnath.

Among the new patients, 79 were hospitalised in the capital and 143 in the districts, according to the Health Services.

On Tuesday, at least 938 dengue patients were in hospitals, 397 in the capital and 541 in the districts.

This year’s dengue outbreak was unprecedented with at least 94,029 patients getting hospitalised since January.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research said it has received reports of 248 suspected dengue deaths since April.

Since September, dengue hospitalisation slowed down, even then, 16,854 dengue patients were hospitalised in September. In the last 22 days of October, at least 6,076 dengue patients were hospitalised.

On October 18, the number of hospitalised dengue patients dropped to 178, the lowest  dengue patient hospitalization  on a single day after July 5.

But in the last four days, the number of dengue patient increased to over 200 per day.

On July 5, at least 131 dengue patients were hospitalized and since then patient intake in hospital increased.

Dengue infections were initially confined to the capital, as had been the situation since the first infection was reported in Bangladesh in 2000.

This year, however, dengue infection spread outside the capital, for the first time, in the fourth week of July.

Just in one week, dengue infection spread to the whole country and its severity overtook that of the capital in the outlying districts.
