Nayeemul’s death Tk 10 crore sought in damages

A Supreme Court lawyer on Sunday served a legal notice on the government and Bangla daily Prothom Alo in favour of paying Tk 10 crore in damages in three days for the death of Dhaka Residential Model College student Nayeemul Abrar.

Nayeemul died after being electrocuted during an event on the college ground, organised by the Prothom Alo on Friday night.

Lawyer Faizullah Fayez also asked the secretaries of several ministries and the daily’s authorities to give a clear statement in three days regarding the allegation of their negligence causing Nayeemul’s death.

They are secretaries of the ministries of information, education and power and energy resources, the editor and publisher of the Prothom Alo and the editor of Kishor Alo, Prothom Alo’s magazine for juveniles

Nayeemul, 15, a non-resident ninth grader, allegedly received electric shock from a power generator set up behind the stage erected for ‘Ki Ananda’, a function arranged by Kishor Alo on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Mohammadpur police station sub-inspector Sajib Gosh said that an unnatural death case was filed with the police station on Saturday by victim’s father Muzibur Rahman.

‘We are investigating the incident as nothing is clear yet,’ he said.

There were allegations that the student died due to delay in treatment as he was not taken to any nearby hospital immediately.

After the incident drew sharp criticisms in the social media, Kishor Alo editor Anisul Hoque in a statement said that Universal Medical College was not the sponsor of the event rather it provided medical support for free to the youths attending the festival.

He said that sending Nayeemul to the hospital was decided by the duty doctor and volunteers as he was not informed about the incident till the time.

He further said that he rushed to the hospital when he came to know about the incident at the end of the event.

Anisul also said that identification of Nayeemul was difficult as he was not in uniform.

Students of the institution protested over the death of Nayeemul and demanded punishment for the accused.

Nayeemul was buried at his village home in Sonaimuri under Noakhali on Saturday.
