10 hurt as Juba League activists clash in Chattogram
At least 10 people were injured as two groups of Awami Juba League activists clashed at the organization’s founding anniversary celebration at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram on Tuesday.
The activists locked in a clash over chanting slogans in favour of deputy minister for education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury.
Witnesses said two groups of Juba League began throwing chairs, brick chips on each other after the minister reached the venue and his supporters welcomed him chanting slogans. Followers of the rival group also chanted slogans against the minister triggering the clash.
Before it, followers of Juba League leader and ward councilor Mobarak Ali and Juba League member Wasim Uddin Chowdhury entered the venue with separate processions.
When councilor Mobarak’s procession entered the venue, his rival group locked in clash which injured 10 activists including Mobarak.
Juba League’s presidium member Altaf Hossain Chowdhury said blamed outsiders for triggering chaos at the meeting.
The meeting was postponed around 4:00pm due to the clash an hour after it started at 3:00pm.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner South SM Mehedi Hasan said 10 activists were injured in the clash and police brought the situation under control soon after the incident.
At the beginning of the meeting, the participants paid homage to the victims of Brahmanbaria train accident observing one-minute silence.
