Government negligence blamed for train crash

Different political parties and road safety campaigners on Tuesday blamed government’s negligence, mismanagement and lack of accountability for Brahamanbaria train accident that left at least 16 people dead and over 50 injured in the early hours of the day.

In separate statements, the parties and campaigners expressed deep shock at the deaths and demanded proper investigation into the accident, exemplary punishment for the people responsible, adequate compensation for the victims and free and proper treatment for the injured ones.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a statement said, ‘Though the country has been witnessing loss of huge lives in frequent and increasing number of accidents on roads, railways and waterways, the government has been showing indifference in taking effective steps by investigating and finding out real causes behind the accidents. That is why, the number of accidents has been increasing in the country.’

He alleged this government never paid heed to the huge loss of lives and properties in accidents as they were active in curbing democratic forces instead of lessening public sufferings.

‘As the government has no accountability, they always had neglected safety of the people. People are now passing a serious anarchic situation. They people are passing days amid grief,’ he said.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Khalequzzaman blamed disobeying signal, not maintaining needed speed limit and negligence for the train accident.

Communist Party of Bangladesh president Mujahidul Islam Selim and general secretary Mohammad Shah Alam alleged the accident exposed the government’s negligence towards rail sector and it a result of irresponsibility.

Bikalpadhara Bangladesh president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, also a former president of the country, National Human Rights Commission chairman Nasima Begum,  Road Safety Foundation leaders including AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed and Jago Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Council,  in separate statements demanded immediate and proper investigation into the accident and punishment for people responsible.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity secretary general Mojammel Hqu Chowdhury also demanded use of helicopter in rescuing the victims.
