Khaleda’s fingers, toes deformed, needs treatment abroad: family
Family members of jailed Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia after meeting her at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Wednesday said her fingers and toes become deformed and she needs to be taken abroad for treatment.
They said Khaleda should be granted bail for having proper treatment.
Khaleda’s sister Selima Islam, after the meeting told reporters though the physicians were coming regularly to visit her, she was not getting proper treatment at the hospital.
The family’s comment about Khaleda Zia’s health came after 15 days of BSMMU authorities’ press conference on Khaleda’s health where the authorities claimed that the health condition of the former prime minister was then stable with significant improvement in some cases and that they were happy with her treatment.
Describing Khaleda’s health condition, Selima on Wednesday afternoon said, ‘Her health condition is not good. Her fingers and toes are deformed. She feels severe pain. She cannot stand or sit on her own. She needs better treatment.’
‘The doctors are coming regularly. But there is no development of her health. She cannot eat using her deformed fingers. She cannot walk or move alone,’ she said.
‘She would certainly go abroad if she was granted bail. We want to take her abroad,’ she said.
Besides Selima, four relatives including her younger brother Shamim Iskander, Shamim’s wife Kaniz Fatima and nephew Avik Iskander visited Khaleda at the hospital’s cabin block, BNP chairperson’s press wing member Shamsuddin Dider said.
He said the family members met Khaleda for about an hour since 3:15pm.
On October 25, after meeting Khaleda at the hospital, the family members alleged that her health was worsening day by day.
Khaleda has been in jail since February 8, 2018 when she was convicted by a Dhaka special court in a graft case that BNP terms false and fabricated.
She was admitted to the BSMMU hospital on April 1 and had been under treatment there since then.\
