Govt unleashing repression: Khaleda

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Wednesday condemned the government’s ‘vindictive behaviour to BNP’ reflected through the arrests of its leaders and activists in ‘false’ and ‘imaginary’ cases.
In a statement, Khaleda said that they were shocked at the incident of sending 86-year-old BNP standing committee member MK Anwar to jail cancelling his bail, he had secured from the Supreme Court, after he surrendered to a lower court in a ‘conspiratorial false case’ showing respect to the law.
She said that it was nothing but the government’s misuse of power and proof of extreme vindictive behaviour to a respected elderly leader.
She also protested at the arrest of her adviser Shaukat Mahmud, also Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists a faction president, saying that he was arrested to stop voice of protests when the government was involved in politicising a national institution like National Press Club.
Khaleda said that the government was arresting and unleashing repression on BNP leaders and activists across the country implicating them in false cases when her party was protesting against the ‘undemocratic and fascist activities of the incumbent.’
Khaleda, in the statement signed by BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon, urged the government to return to the path of democracy shunning repression.
She said that the government came to power without vote snatching people’s voting rights and was continuously earning people’s hate.
