BNP slams govt for price hike

Criticising the government for the soaring prices of essentials, including that of onion, BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Thursday said a socioeconomic situation like that of 1974 had been prevailing in the country.

‘The people of Bangladesh are angry over the onion crisis. A government which is unable to ensure the supply of an essential item like onion has no moral right to be there in power,’ he said.

Speaking at a doa mahfil, Moudud said a problem over salt had been created after that of onion while rice prices kept rising inflicting sufferings on people.

‘The sceneries of 74 are still evident in my eyes. A socioeconomic stability had been there in the country in 74. Now, I hear the same footfall of it,’ he observed.

BNP arranged the programme at the party’s Nayapaltan central office marking its acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s 55th birthday.

Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, urged the government to quit immediately for its failure to deliver on all fronts or step down.

‘This the high time for you to step down and take measures for holding a fair and credible election so that people can cast their votes freely without any fear and intimidation, and thus they can establish a representative government of their choice,’ the BNP leader added.

Or else, he warned, people will force the government to quit and accept their justified demands.

Moudud said the year 2019 is a bad year for the nation as many unwarranted incidents are happening throughout the year since the government has lost control over the state machinery.

He said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been kept in jail by the government as part of its efforts to suppress the opposition.

The BNP leader said, ‘BNP chairperson is not getting bail to walk out of jail only because of political reasons. We must take to streets to have her freed if she’s not released on bail.’

Wishing Tarique a long life, he said, ‘We expect Tarique Rahman to take the country forward like a statesman in the days to come.’
