Anandabazar reports unease in India over Hasina protocol

The Indian Bharatiya Janata Party-led government refrained from extending appropriate protocol to Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina during her recent daylong visit to Kolkata reportedly to avoid controversy involving National Register of Citizens.

The central government neither send a minister nor even a senior official to jointly receive Sheikh Hasina with West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who has been opposing National Register of Citizens propagated by the BJP government, according to a report of the Kolkata-based Indian Bangla daily Anandabazar Patrika published on Sunday.

Domestic compulsion was the main reason, the report said, adding that the BJP government lodged campaign to expel illegal entrants while Mamata was strongly opposing the idea.

Averseness of the central government to extend Hasina appropriate protocol created uneasiness among the Indian quarters, it said.

Sheikh Hasina visited Kolkata on Friday to watch the second Test match of a two-match Test series between Bangladesh and India at the Eden Gardens.

Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly initially invited Sheikh Hasina to watch the second Test match.

Later, Indian prime minister extended a separate invitation to her Bangladesh counterpart to inaugurate the series.
