AL considers them lords, kings, gods: Fakhrul
Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said that Awami League leaders had been thinking them to be lords, kings and gods which created problems in the country.
The BNP secretary general made the comment while talking to reporters at his Kalibari home in Thakurgaon town.
‘They always become lords after assuming power. They became lords by forming BKSAL in 1975 after assuming power in 1972. They have been practicing lordship for 10 years. Now they have firmly become lords. It’s a problem of mindset,’ he said.
‘They don’t have democratic mindset. They have been thinking that “we are the lords, we are the kings, we are the gods”. This is the problem,’ he said.
Asked for comments on Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader’s remark that BNP didn’t have capability to hold rallies without government permission, Fakhrul said the problem of Obaidul was ‘mental problem’ as they began to think them to be lords after going to power.
‘They want to keep everything in their grips— even how another political party would run their activities. They want to control all these too,’ he said.
He said that the constitution clearly empowered all the people and parties to gather, hold rallies and organise protests.
‘We don’t seek permission, we only inform that we want to hold rally. Permission is needed from those who own the venue… We have done these repeatedly. But they are practicing like “village heads”.’
He said the government show excuses for giving permission of holding rallies and often gave consent at the last minute. ‘Then it becomes very difficult to make meeting successful.’
Everything now is happening as per direction of the prime minister as if she will do everything, said Fakhrul. ‘In a welfare state, in a state of 160 million people, things cannot happen this way. As a result, the country lacks good governance. It turns into a failed state.’
He said the most of the minsters were making remarks irresponsibly without thinking its impact. ‘The present unstable situation in onion and salt market is the impact of their irresponsible remarks.’
‘Ministers of this government are acting totally unprofessional. Present economic crisis is result of unprofessional behavior of the finance ministry,’ he said.
District BNP president Taimur Rahman and other district leaders were present.
