Downpour leaves many places in disarray
Heavy downpour, coupled with onrush of water from hills, caused landslide and almost snapped road communications between the hill tracts and Chittagong.
Rainfall in Feni district was recorded at highest 91 millimetre in the last 24 hours as the overall flood situation in the Chittagong division worsened.
A minor boy was killed and another critically injured in a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall for the last three days, at New Gulshan in Bandarban municipality area, Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sajjad Hossain, 2, son of Mohammad Dilu of the area.
The Fire Service and the locals rescued four people from the area and sent them to Sadar Hospital. One of them, Sui May Prasna, was sent to Chittagong Medical Hospital for better treatment.
On August 1, four people, including children, were killed in Lama from landslide.
Meanwhile, Army Para, Bus Station, Hafejgona and Islampur of Bandarban municipality went under 10 to 12 feet water. Some 15,000 people were marooned by the rain-triggered flood for the last three days. Residents of these areas were shifted to safe shelter centres.
Road communications of Bandarban with Chittagong and Rangamati remained snapped as Rangamati-Bandarban and Chittagong-Bandarban roads were inundated by water, causing
immense suffering to the commuters.
In Khagrachari, nearly 100 houses of Muslimpara, Gonjapara and Santinagar areas have been inundated by flood water due to surging water from different rivers.
Water flow of the river Sangu at Dohazari point recorded a 187 per cent rise, and 320 per cent at Bandarban, in the last 24 hours. Still, the river is flowing at the danger level at both points.
Matamuhuri, another river of the hilly region, flowed over the danger level at Lama and Chiringa points.
The river Muhuri at Parshuram flowed 20 centimetre above the danger level, flooding new villages at Feni. Cracks appeared in at least half a dozen points of the Muhuri-Kahuya-Celenia embankment of the district.
According to the flood forecasting center of the water development board, all the major river systems are showing a rising trend, which is likely to continue over the next 72 hours.
Heavy rainfall might continue in the next 24 hours in the central, north-central, north-east and south-eastern part of the country.
The flood situation in some parts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Feni, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts might deteriorate in the next 24 hours.
In Sylhet, daylong torrential rain submerged many parts of Sylhet city, throwing public life into disarray. Shibganj, Sonarpara, Upashahar, Pathapara and Terorton went under water due to the incessant rainfall.
Shopping malls and other businesses witnessed a thin presence of customers as many people preferred to stay indoors while the same scenario prevailed at schools, colleges and offices.
In Sunamganj, low-lying areas of the district have gone under water following the torrential rain and onrush from the hills.
The Surma water is still flowing at 86cm above its danger level.
Many areas, including Launchghat, Mach Bazar, Nabinagar and Sahebbari ghat and Tahirpur, Sunamganj and Doarabazar road, went under the water.
