Investigation into convicts wearing IS-inscribed cap launched
The prison directorate on Wednesday launched a high-power investigation hours after they saw two of the seven convicts of Holey Artisan attack wearing prayer caps inscribed Islamic State group’s signature.
Inspector general of prisons Brigadier General AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha told New Age that they noticed it following television reports and initiated a three-member probe headed by Colonel Md Abrar Hossain.
Two other members of the committee were Dhaka’s deputy inspector general of prisons Tipu Sultan and assistant inspector general Amirul Islam. The body was asked to submit its report within five working days.
The Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal on Wednesday sentenced seven of the eight accused to death and acquitted the rest in the case filed for the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan in the capital on July 1, 2016.
Following the verdict, the death convicts — Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib Gandhi alias Abu Omar and Rakibul Hasan Rigan alias Rafiul Islam— were seen wearing black cap inscribed ‘La Ilaha Illal Lah’ and ‘Allah Rasul Muhammad’ in a circle. Both of them claimed that they were member of Islamic State group.
Rakibul Hasan told New Age that ‘I am a supporter of IS.’
Dhaka Metropolitan Police counter terrorism and transnational crime unit chief Monirul Islam said that they had not seen any member of the IS group wearing such cap.
On July 1, 2016, a group of armed extremists stormed upscale cafe Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan in the
month of Ramadan and killed 20 people within half an hour and kept the cafe under seize for 12 hours. The Islamic State group claimed the responsibility for the attack which was rejected by the government.
