POLICE-BNP CLASH 7 more BNP activists held

Police arrested at least seven more leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its associate organisations in the front of the National Press Club and its nearby areas in Dhaka on Friday in connection with a case filed over a clash between BNP activists and the police on Abdul Gani Road in front of the High Court on November 26.

The arrested include BNP training affairs secretary ABM Mosharraf Hossain, activists Alam and Towhid, Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal joint convener Firoz Kibria and Chhatra Dal leader Anwar Hossain, according to sources in the police and the court.

The Shahbagh police placed the seven before the court of metropolitan magistrate Nivana Khayer Jemmy who sent them to judicial custody, the New Age court correspondent reported.

Mosharraf, Alam and Towhid were arrested at about 12:15pm at the National Press Club area on specific allegation, Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Abul Hasan told New Age on the spot.

The three were arrested when they had been coming out of the Press Club after attending a programme organised by a pro-BNP organisation.

Police on November 26 evening filed a case against over 500 people including top leaders of BNP, its fronts and pro-BNP organisations with Shahbagh Police Station over the clash while the BNP activists were staging a demonstration demanding release of imprisoned BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir protested and condemned the arrest and demanded immediate release of them.
