BNP wants probe into corruption in EC
Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday demanded investigation into ‘corruption’ in the Election Commission.
The party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the demand after a meeting of the party’s standing committee at the party chairperson’s office at Gulshan in Dhaka in the evening.
‘The Election Commission is divided over appointments in the commission. The chief election commissioner and secretary are deciding about appointments and different activities which is anti-constitutional. The decision should be taken by all the commissioners. They failed to do this,’ he said.
He said that an idea has developed in public mind that there were corruption in the commission and BNP thought that Anti-Corruption Commission should find out the corruption there.
Fakhrul termed the December 30, 2018 general election as ‘actually no election’ and demanded resignation of the commission.
He informed the party would organise press conference on December 3 on commodity prices and on November 7 on push in of Indian people into Bangladesh as a sequel of NRC in India’s Assam.
He urged the government to form a commission in connection with oppression on female workers abroad to investigate into the allegations and solve the problems.
He criticised the role of the government in this connection and alleged that the government had failed to take proper steps.
Fakhrul said they would send letter to the foreign ministry to know about the deals with India during the prime minister’s early November visit to India as BNP did not get any response from the Prime Minister’s Office even after a week of submitting letter seeking the information.
Fakhrul hoped Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University authorities would submit the correct medical report on the party chairperson Khaleda Zia to the Supreme Court and Khaleda would get justice.
He expressed concern over Shahbagh police’s lodging case against over 500 BNP leaders and activists and alleged that common people were being harassed and arrested centring the case.
He demanded immediate withdrawal of the case.
