30 injured in AL, BNP clash in Sirajganj

At least 30 people including two police personnel were injured in a clash between the activists of local Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Kalibari-Eliot Bridge Road in Sirajganj on Sunday.

The BNP office in the area was set ablaze and some shops were vandalised during the rampage at around 11:00am.

Police lobbed at least 50 teargas shells and shot rubber bullets and took the situation under control at around 1:15pm.

Abu Yusuf, additional superintendent of police, confirmed the matter to the journalists.

Among the injured 11 are —Helal Uddin, municipality AL panel mayor; Sohag Molla;  Mirza Mostafa Zaman, district BNP organising secretary; Hitler Shamim, assistant organising secretary; Mohammad Ali Swapon; Taikul Hasan, joint general secretary of Chhatra Dal; Zibrail Hossain; Firoz Ahmed; Abdul Hakim, Shecchasebak Dal joint secretary general; sadar thana sub-inspectors Tarikul Islam and Abu Zafar Nayan.

The injured are being treated at local hospitals.  

According to Helal Uddin, municipality AL panel mayor, said that they brought out a procession from Sirajganj Government College after inaugurating the foundation stone of a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the campus.

‘When we reached in Kalibari-Eliot Bridge area, they locked in a clash with local BNP activists at around 11:00am that left some 15 AL activists injured including me,’ he said.   

Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, member of the standing committee of the central BNP, claimed that AL activists attacked them when the district BNP brought out a prescheduled procession demanding release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

 ‘At least 10 to 12 BNP activists were injured from teargas shells and rubber bullets. They set ablaze the district BNP party office and vandalised some shops in the area,’ he said.
