4 Bangladesh-origin women win UK polls
Four Bangladesh-origin female candidates of Labour Party won in the United Kingdom parliamentary elections though their party faced defeat.
They are Rushanara Ali, Tulip Siddiq, Rupa Huq and Apsana Begum, according to British Broadcasting Corporation.
Rushanara Ali, the first Bangladesh-origin British lawmaker, was re-elected from the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency with 44,052 votes. She has been elected to the same constituency since 2010.
Tulip Siddiq, granddaughter of Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, retained her Hampstead and Kilburn seat with a margin of 14,188 votes. She was first elected to the British parliament in 2015.
Tulip is daughter of Sheikh Rehana and niece of Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Rupa Huq was re-elected from the Ealing Central and Action seat with a margin of 13,350 votes.
Apsana Begum, a first-time candidate, won in Poplar and Limehouse with securing 38,550 votes.
Seven Bangladesh-origin candidates fielded by different political parties contested in the polls held on Thursday, according to Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, a member of Bangladesh diaspora in London, told New Age over phone.
