Foreign minister hopes India will follow procedures

Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Sunday hoped that India would follow standard operating procedures on sending people to Bangladesh.

‘There is a standard procedure for sending if there is any Bangladeshi living illegally in India,’ Momen told journalists at the foreign ministry, ‘We hope they would follow that.’

On a question of entering some people to Bangladesh from India, Momen said some people might be enticed by touts to come to Bangladesh as there is shortage of job in India. ‘Economic situation here [Bangladesh] is better and there is arrangement for free food for the poor.’

The minister said people, who are not Bangladesh nationals, would be sent back if they come here without following a due process. ‘Bangladesh citizens maintain their rights to come back home. We would send the other people, if any.’

He described National Register of Citizens of India as an internal matter of the country.

Scores of people were reportedly entering Bangladesh from India after the Indian government approved National Register of Citizens and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. 

Momen had to cancel his visit to India scheduled to take place from Thursday due to domestic compulsions a day after he was critical about development in India including enactment of a bill based on religion and statement made by India’s influential minister Amit Shah involving Bangladesh.
