Government asked to submit progress report on level crossings
The High Court on Sunday directed the government to submit in three months a progress report about fencing risky level crossings and stopping illegal level crossings.
The court in a rule also asked the government to explain in four weeks why it would not be directed to stop all the illegal level crossings and structures, and fencing the risky level crossings areas to save the lives of people from the rail accident.
Secretaries of the cabinet division, the ministries of LGRD and railways, the director-general of the Bangladesh Railway and the inspector general of police were asked to reply to the rule in four weeks.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the ruling after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer Syeda Shahin Ara Laily.
Petitioner’s lawyer Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan referring newspapers’ clipping submitted that a total of 244 people died and 228 were injured in 235 railway-related fatalities in 2018 as there were 1,412 level crossings of Bangladesh Railway where no gatemen were designated.
