BNP to prepare list of martyrs if voted to power
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday said that his party would prepare a list of independence war martyrs if the party would be voted to power.
He was addressing a discussion on ‘spirit of war of independence and today’s Bangladesh’ organised by Nagarik Odhikar Andolan Forum at Photo Journalists’ Association auditorium at Purana Paltan in Dhaka marking Victory Day.
Amir Khasru called on the Awami League leaders to decide during its on-going council session on how the ruling party would restore democracy, people’s right to vote and basic constitutional rights.
‘We want to know the names of all those made supreme sacrifice during the war for independence. People of the country want to know their names. BNP clearly announced that that they would prepare the list of martyrs when they would go to power and write their names on columns at their respective localities,’ Khasru said. He also said that the government was not preparing the list for unknown reasons and that the BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khelda Zia was sued for demanding list of martyrs.
‘The country needs another struggle as all the targets of the independence war were snatched,’ he said.
Terming Khaleda as the ‘mother of democracy’, he said that she was kept confined illegally and forcibly and that united struggle would be needed to free Khaleda and to restore democracy.
Mentioning Thursday’s Amnesty International statement that urged Bangladesh authorities to guarantee access to health care and fair trial rights to detained Khaleda Zia, he said that the statement from such an international human rights watchdog seriously questioned Bangladesh’s political, democratic, human rights and rule of law situation.
Presided over by the Forum adviser Quazi Moniruzzaman, the discussion was also addressed, among others, by BNP joint-secretary general Moazzem Hossain Alal, executive committee members Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah and Bilkis Islam and Dhaka south city unit vice-president Farid Uddin Ahmed.
