Two injured in DUCSU attack shifted to ICU as no more arrest made
Two more people injured in the attack on University Central Students’ Union vice-president Nurul Huq Nur and his followers were shifted to the intensive care unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital as police were yet to arrest any more suspect on Wednesday.
Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council leader Rashed Khan said at a press conference that the group’s joint convener and Jagannath University student APM Suhel was taken to ICU on Wednesday.
DMCH neurosurgery department chairman Rajiul Haque said that Suhel was not out of danger as he received severe injury on his head and could be required two more days at the intensive care unit.
Another injured student Tuhin Farabi was also taken back to the ICU as his condition had deteriorated, said BGSRPC leader Rashed, adding that their seven other fellows were still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Bin Yamin Mollah, a BGSRPC joint convener alleged that the DMCH authorities provided ‘wrong information’ to the media about the victims’ condition on Tuesday morning and accusing them of hiding the truth.
Police so far arrested three leaders of Muktijuddha Mancha out of a total 37 accused named by Nurul in a case after the attack on Sunday on him and his followers left at least 39 people injured.
The investigators of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Wednesday visited the damaged DUCSU office, where the attack took place, but were yet to locate the digital video recorder, which went missing following the incident.
BGSRPC leader Rashed demanded the resignation of Dhaka University proctor AKM Golam Rabbani, accusing him of patronising the culprits, who had taken away the CCTV footages.
‘The proctor paved the way for the attack and the university unit Chhatra League helped CCTV footages getting vanished under his patronisation,’ alleged Rashed.
Proctor Golam Rabbani told New Age that a committee was formed to find out what happened to the CCTV footages.
Police said that the absence of CCTV footages is hampering their investigation.
‘We have visited the place where the attack was carried out. We spoke to the proctor over the CCTV footage but it could not be located,’ said detective branch (south) deputy commissioner Razib Al Masud.
He said that not only the DVR but also monitor was taken away from the place.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said steps would be taken after analysing the surveillance camera footage of the attack.
‘Everyone involved in the attack will be brought to the book,’ he told reporters while attending a programme in Dhaka on Wednesday.
BGSRPC’s Rashed said after arresting three Muktijuddha Mancha leaders the police kept a blind eye on Chhatra League’s Dhaka University chapter president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hussain, who were also allegedly involved in the attack.
Detective Branch of police arrested Al Mamun, central general secretary of a faction of Muktijuddha Mancha and Arafat Turjo, general secretary of its Dhaka University unit on Monday and later arrested another leader Mehedi Hasan Shanto on Tuesday.
Injured DUCSU vice-president Nurul on Tuesday filed a case with the Shahbagh police station accusing 37 leaders and activists of BCL Muktijuddha Mancha.
In his complaint, Nurul said that they had also looted Tk 15,000 and took 20 mobile phones.
Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon and its general secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha meanwhile in a joint statement condemned the attack Nurul and others.
They termed the attack as a move to make DUCSU dysfunctional.
The WPB leaders demanded the attackers be brought to justice without delay as Nurul had been attacked nine times on the campus and outside after he was elected VP early this year.
