BNP is father of destroying democracy, says Obaidul

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday termed Bangladesh Nationalist Party as the father of destroying democracy, saying that BNP had killed the democracy in 2006 by making 1.23 crore fake voters.

‘BNP founder Ziaur Rahman had killed the democracy by being elected president through a referendum. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had killed the democracy in the Magura by-polls,’ he said while addressing a discussion in the city as the chief guest.

Dhaka city south and north units of Awami League organised the discussion marking Victory Day of Democracy commemorating the party’s landslide win in the 11th parliamentary elections held on December 30 last year.

Obaidul, also road transport and bridges minister, said democracy had been trampled under the feet for 21 years after the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975.

‘Prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina had restored the chained democracy in 1981’, he said adding that Sheikh Hasina had been a harbinger of victory braving death risks many times.

Noting that democracy does not suit with BNP, the AL general secretary said BNP was presently a failed party both in election and movement.

‘That’s why today is a black day for them. But the AL becomes victorious bathing in the love of people. So, today is our victory day,’ he said.

Urging the city Awami League leaders to evaluate the dedicated leaders before announcing the full-fledged committees and to create space for the good people in the party, Obaidul said there was no room for terrorists, corrupts, tender manipulators, extortionists and drug pedlar in the AL.

He said stern actions would be taken against BNP for the sake of public lives and properties if the party resorts to any anarchy in the name of movement.

Speaking about party nomination to the mayoral candidate for the Dhaka South City Corporation polls, the AL general secretary said incumbent DSCC mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon had made some mistakes alongside successes.

‘But Khokon is not a case of failure. We have, however, given the party nomination to comparatively more popular and clean-imaged candidates to ensure victory in the Dhaka south and north city corporations’ elections,’ he said.

Dhaka City South Awami League president Abu Ahmed Mannafi presided over the discussion addressed, among others, by AL presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, joint general secretaries Mahabubul Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AL Central Working Committee members Mofazzal Hossain Chowhdury Maya and Qamrul Islam, organising secretary Afzal Hossain, publicity and publication secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap and office secretary Biplob Barua.

Awami League’s joint general secretary Hasan Mahmud at another function said actually BNP and Jatiya Oikya Front unveiled their masks by observing December 30 as a ‘democracy killing day’ or ‘black day’. ‘They tried to kill democracy in 2018 and 2014 as well,’ he added.

He said the countrymen saw Oikya Front’s ‘big procession’ on Sunday marking the day where around 150 activists took part. ‘Even, many central leaders of different parties of the alliance didn’t take part in the procession. Now they are talking baseless,’ said Hasan, also information minister.
