JSC, JDC pass rates rise
The pass rates in the Junior School Certificate and Junior Dakhil Certificate examinations, held after eight years of schooling, rose this year compared to the last year.
On the other hand, the pass rates in the Primary Education Completion and Ibtedayi exams, held at the end of class five, declined this year in comparison with the last year rates.
The number of Grade Point Average five achievers in the JSC exam increased this year but the numbers of the highest grade point achievers in the JDC, PEC and Ibtedayi exams went down compared to the last year.
Like in earlier years, girls are ahead of boys in terms of almost all indicators in these exams, show statistics.
Barishal Education Board topped the nine general education boards in the results of the JSC, JDC and PEC exams while the pass rate in the Dhaka board is the lowest in the combined results of the eight-year final exams.
Education minister Dipu Moni and primary and mass education minister Md Zakir Hossain on Tuesday held separate press conferences in the morning and afternoon respectively at their Secretariat offices to brief journalists about the results.
Earlier in the morning, both ministers and the chairpersons of the nine general education and one madrasah boards handed over the results to prime minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban.
At the same function, the prime minister inaugurated the National Textbook Festival across the country.
In the combined results of the JSC and JDC exams, 87.9 per cent of the examinees passed against 85.83 per cent in 2018.
Separately, 87.58 per cent of the examinees passed this year’s JSC exam, compared with 85.28 per cent last year.
In the JDC exam this year, 89.77 per cent of the candidates became successful, as against last year’s 89.04 per cent.
This year the number of schools and madrassahs securing the 100 per cent pass rate in the exams at the end of class eight increased to 5,243 from 4,769 in 2018 while those with the zero pass rate decreased to 33 this year from 43 last year.
As for the PEC exam, 95.5 per cent of the examinees passed this year, declining from last year’s 97.59 per cent.
In the Ibtedayi exam, 95.96 per cent of the candidates passed this year, compared to last year’s 97.69 per cent.
The number of schools with the 100 per cent pass rate in the PEC exam this year is 67,893 while those with the zero pass rate is 341.
In the combined results of the JSC and JDC exams, the Barishal board achieved the highest pass rate for the second consecutive year with 97.05 per cent this year and the Dhaka board the lowest pass rate of 82.72 per cent this years.
The combined pass rate in the JSC and JDC exams this year is 94.1 per cent in the Rajshahi general education and madrasah boards, 92.79 per cent in the Sylhet boards, 91.08 per cent in the Jashore boards, 88.8 per cent in the Cumilla boards, 87.21 per cent in the Mymensingh boards, 83.92 per cent in the Dinajpur boards and 82.93 per cent in the Chattogram boards.
In the PEC exam results, the highest 96.93 per cent of the students passed in the Barishal board while in the Ibtedayi exam the highest 97.81 per cent came out successful in the Rajshahi board.
Among the country’s 64 districts, Gazipur secured the first place with the pass rate of 99.14 per cent and Doulatkhan upazila achieved 100 per cent pass rate among the 510 upazilas.
About the pass rate in the Dhaka board, Education minister Dipu Moni told the press conference that the pass rate of more than 82 per cent could not be labelled as degradation.
Dhaka Education Board chairman Professor Ziaul Haque said that in Dhaka division’s 14 districts the pass rate in the Dhaka metropolitan city area was around 90 per cent while in some districts the rate was even under 70 per cent.
Deputy education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury was also present at the press conference.
Primary and mas education minister Md Zakir Hossain said that it was natural that the pass rate would not be same every year.
‘This year we took the exams nicely and evaluated the answer scripts nicely,’ he said while replying a question about the decreases in the pass rates.
In the combined results of this year’s JSC and equivalent exams, a total of 78,429 examinees obtained GPA 5 in all subjects, compared with last year’s 68,095 candidates.
In the JSC exam, 76,747 candidates secured GPA 5 and the figure for the JDC exam is 1,682, which were 66,108 and 1,987 respectively in 2018.
In the PEC exam, 3,26,088 examinees achieved GPA 5 and the figure for the Ibtedayi exam is 11,877, which were 3,68,193 and 12,264 respectively in 2018.
‘I believe that if we talk less about GPA 5 then it would be good for our students and our education system,’ said Dipu Moni, adding that the craze for GPA 5 was putting incredible pressure on the students.
She said that importance should be given to enhancing the students’ creativity.
The education minister also said that they were working on changing the grade point system.
Zakir Hossain said that they were planning to make the primary education completion exams easier to reduce the pressure on the students.
In terms of subject-wise pass rate in the PEC exam, the highest 99.52 per cent of the examinees passed religion and moral education, followed by 99.19 per cent in Bangla, 98.99 per cent in Bangladesh and world affairs, 98.89 per cent in primary science, 98.49 per cent in English and the lowest 97.81 per cent in mathematics.
In the Ibtedayi exam, the highest 99.72 per cent of the candidates passed Quran and Akaid, followed by 99.25 per cent pass rate in society and science, 98.97 per cent in mathematics, 98.96 per cent in Arabic, 98.81 per cent in Bangla and the lowest 98.29 per cent English.
This year, in the JSC and JDC exams together, the pass rate for boys is 87.03 per cent while for girls 88.64 per cent and among the total GPA 5 achievers 45,883 are girls and 32,546 boys.
In the PEC exam this year, a total of 23,43,743 examinees came out successful and of them 12,71,589 are girls and 10,72,154 boys.
Among the GPA 5 achievers in this exam 1,84,637 are girls and 1,41,451 are boys.
In the Ibtedayi exam, 1,50,835 boys and 1,41,040 girls emerged with success and 6,192 girls secured GPA 5 against 5,685 boys.
