Protests flare up at DU after rape of fellow

Protests flared up on the Dhaka University campus on Monday following the rape incident of a second-year student of the university in the city’s Kurmitola area on Sunday night.

Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, formed a human chain and held a rally in front of Raju Sculpture on the campus in the morning demanding immediate arrest and trial of the perpetrator.

Besides, general students of the university and other nearby institutions also gathered on the campus in the morning to protest at the incident.

They also formed a human chain and staged a sit-in programme on the campus demanding capital punishment for the perpetrator.

Sifatul Islam, a student of DU philosophy department, started a fast-unto-death programme in front of the Raju Sculpture protesting against rape and seeking justice for the girl.

Classmates of the victim said that she had been picked up by an unidentified man after she got down from the university bus at Kurmitola around 7:00pm and was made unconscious.

Later, the miscreant took her to a nearby place and raped her.

The victim regained her consciousness around 10:00pm and contacted with her classmates. She was admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight. On information, DU proctor, teachers and students visited her at the hospital.

Proctor Rabbani expressed shock at the incident and said legal actions would be taken.

Bacchu Miah, inspector of DMCH police outpost, said the girl was hospitalised around 12:45am.

DU BCL unit leaders and activists brought out a procession on the campus around 3:00am on Monday demanding justice for the victim and punishment of the rapist.
