Court orders judicial probe into Arzu’s death in ’gunfight’
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Tuesday asked to initiate judicial inquiry into the killing of Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Arzu Mia by Rapid Action Battalion in a ‘gunfight’ at Hazaribagh in the city on August 18.
Metropolitan magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan passed the order after the victim Arzu Miah’s brother Masud Rana on Sunday filed a case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court accusing RAB-2 commanding officer Masud Rana, its deputy assistant director Shahinur Rahman, inspector Wahid and informant Ratan of killing Arzu after abduction.
Following Arzu’s death, Rapid Action Battalion-2 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel SM Masud Rana was withdrawn and attached to the elite force headquarters on Monday.
Battalion legal and media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan, however, termed the attachment as part of mere administrative routine work.
Besides, Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner (Dhanmondi zone) Reazaul Karim was also attached to DMP headquarters and Hazaribagh police station officer-in-charge Mainul Islam was transferred to another police station on August 19.
Arzu was one of the accused of a teenager Raja, 16, murder case.
Earlier on August 17, Raja, son of Babul Hossain of 46 Ganaktuli of Hazaribagh, was reportedly picked up by Arzu and his associates from his (Raja’s) house in the morning alleging that the teenage boy stole Arzu’s mobile phone set.
Raja was taken to Arzu’s house and was reportedly tortured to death.
