BNP asks Inu to clarify Ganabahini’s role in Mujib killing

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday asked chief of a Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction and information minister Hasanul Haq Inu to clarify before the nation the role of himself, his party and Ganabahini in killing the country’s founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The party said people like Inu who practised politics of terrorism and was himself an enemy of democracy had no right to deliver sermon on democracy.
BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon at a news briefing at the party’s central office came up with these observations at the party’s regular press briefing.
He said Inu must say what was the JSD leaders’ role during 1972 to 1975 and make it clear to the nation what was his (Inu) role and that of Ganabahini and his party in killing Sheikh Mujib.
He asked Inu, deputy chief of the then Ganabahini, to resign as minister if he did not do that.
Ripon came down hard on the JSD faction president for making statement countering BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s recent statement that democracy was now ‘under siege’.
To refute the statement, Inu said Khaleda was out of the boundary of democracy, Ripon said.
Branding JSD, Ganabahini and its leader Inu as enemies of democracy, the BNP spokesman said it was unfortunate if lessons of democracy had to be taken from those who were involved in terrorism and whose political career had begun with terrorism.
He said nation did not want to hear sermon of democracy from them and asked Inu to stop delivering sermons.
Ripon said the parasite ministers of the incumbent government like Inu were making statements attacking the BNP chairperson to please prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a bid to preserve their posts and positions.
He said it was unfortunate that Awami League president Sheikh Hasina incorporated into her cabinet some people who had wanted to make drum with the skin of her late father and some who had tried their best to turn the country volatile during 1972-75.
He said JSD and Ganabahini had challenged the rule of Sheikh Mujib and wanted to overthrow his government.
He mentioned that Awami League presidium member Sheikh Selim in a recent statement said that JSD and Ganabahini had created the background of Sheikh Mujib killing on August 15 in 1975.
Ripon said not only BNP but also top level leaders of the ruling party now every day spoke about the misdeeds of the JSD during 1972-75, including killings and robbery, to destabilise the country.
He said Awami League, on one hand, kept saying about trial of Sheikh Mujib’s assassination while, on the other hand, they put in power those who created the background of his killing. Real trial of Mujib would not possible by keeping them in power, he added.
He said Inu and his party should clear their position before the nation and apologise for their misdeeds if they wanted to hold their posts.
Ripon asked the government for proper treatment and immediate release of detained BNP joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
BNP leaders Mahmudul Hasan, Abdul Halim, Ziaur Rahman Khan, Abdul Latif Jony, Shamimur Rahman Shamim, Abdus Salam Azad and Nurul Kabir Shahin, among others, were present.
