Dhaka University Student Rape Protests on

The protests demanding justice over the rape of a Dhaka University female student in the capital on Sunday night continued on Friday while the Detective Branch kept interrogating the lone rape suspect Mohammed Majnu.

DB officials said that they were waiting for the DNA test result on the evidence sent to the laboratory at the Criminal Investigation Department to confirm the identities of the suspect and the victim.

Dhaka University students and different socio-cultural organisations on the day continued protests for the fifth consecutive day demanding justice for the victim.

On the DU campus, students held rallies and took out processions in protest against the rape of their fellow student. They also repeated their demand for an exemplary punishment for the perpetrator.

Leaders of Samajtantrik Mahila Forum on Friday held a protest rally in front of National Press Club and demanded exemplary punishment for the offender.

The women’s rights body organised the rally to mark its 36th founding anniversary and in protest against the repression on children and women, which has recently seen increases in the country.

President of the organisation Raushan Ara Russo, who chaired the rally, said that the person who raped the DU student must get an exemplary punishment.

She also expressed deep concern over the increasing repression on children and women in the country.

General secretary of the organisation Shampa Basu demanded death penalty for the rapist.

She also called on the government to ensure security of the citizens, especially children and women in the country.

The rally was addressed, among others, by the organisation’s central leaders Rukhsana Afroz Asha, Mukta Baroi and Jesmine Morium.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.

Leaders of Nari Samhoti, another women’s organisation, at a protest rally in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh called on the government to take immediate steps to curb the repression on children and women across the country.

Nari Samhoti on Friday held countrywide rallies protesting against the repression on children and women.

The organisation’s general secretary Aparajita Chanda chaired the central rally at Shahbagh.

Garment workers and minor girls are also facing repression in the country, Aparajita said.

She, too, called on the government to take immediate steps to contain the repression.

Other Nari Samhoti leaders, including Zannatul Ferdous, teacher Mithila Mahfuz, Chhatra Federation president Golam Mostafa and others spoke at the rally.

The rape victim was discharged from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday noon after the doctors gave clearance.
