Charge sheet in DU student rape in a month: DB

The Detective Branch investigators said on Saturday that they were trying to complete their investigation within a month into the rape of a Dhaka University student taken place on January 5.

The investigators said that they have received the court permission to conduct forensic examination of the evidences and related DNA profiling and were waiting for the report to confirm the identity of the suspect Mohammad Majnu held over the crime by the Rapid Action Battalion.

‘We have received the court permission for necessary examination. In the meantime, we are examining the statement of the suspect and taking him to the place of occurrence to get a clear picture of the crime,’ said the DB’s deputy commissioner (north division) Mashiur Rahman.

He said they were also examining whether the crime could be committed by the suspect.

Mashiur hoped that they would be able to submit the charge by a month.

As the part of the investigation, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yeasmin Ara recorded the statement of the rape victim under Section 22 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000. The investigators were examining the statements they gathered so far about the incident and  two persons—Khairul Islam and Aruna Biswash—would be made witnesses in the case.

According to the RAB officials, Majnu snatched away a mobile phone from the victim and sold it to Aruna at Tk 500 and Aruna gave it to Khairul for repairing as Majnu left Dhaka after the rape incident.

According to the DB investigators, Aruna gave Tk 400 out of her Tk 500 as promised and Majnu appeared on January 7 in Dhaka to get the rest money but was caught early hours on January 8, the RAB and DB officials.

Majnu was now under police custody for seven days on a court order granted on January 9, the officials said.

New Age correspondent at Dhaka University added students under the banner of Community Against Rape and Sexual Violence on Saturday marched towards Kurmitola, the crime scene where the student of Dhaka University was raped and beaten.

Around hundred students participated in the procession which began from the Raju Memorial Monument on the campus on Saturday afternoon demanding justice.

They also demanded to conclude the rape incident trial within ninety days under speedy trial tribunal, beefed up security and bring the whole area from Kurmitola bus stand to airport under CCTV, stopping all illegal business including drug dealings at the area and bring the entire Dhaka city under CCTV to ensure security of women.

Dhaka University professor Mesbah Kamal said rape became rampant in the country but the rapists in many cases escape punishment due to loopholes of law.

A group of Dhaka University students on the day also continued demonstration at Raju Memorial Monument demanding maximum punishment for the rapist.
