Climate change likely to displace 4cr people: PM
About 4 crore people living in 70 upazilas of 19 costal districts are feared to be displaced by the adverse impact of climate change, said prime minister Sheikh Hasina in parliament on Wednesday.
The leader of the house, also ruling Awami League president, however, did not mention in how many years those people would be displaced.
Responding to a query of treasury bench member of parliament Shahiduzzaman Sarker, PM also told the house that average temperature of Bangladesh has increased by one degree in May and 0.5 degree in November in the recent times due to climate change.
In a written answer, Sheikh Hasina said salty water of sea was entering up to 100 kilometres into the river during summer because of climate change.
‘Average rainfall has increased. Especially excessive rainfall in a short time caused water logging in town areas. Cyclone trend in Bay of Bengal has increased. Unrest sea has caused adverse impact on fishermen’s livelihood,’ the PM said.
She also said that balance in environment was damaged due to climate change.
As a result, it had put an adverse impact on our bio-diversity, agriculture and livelihood, she added.
Sheikh Hasina also said that different diseases carried out by insects had also increased due to climate change.
Hasina outlined her government’s various measures, including formulation of the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan to increase national capacity to fight back the impact of climate change.
PM also said her government has taken a programme to plant one crore trees in 2020 across the country to mark country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary which would play significant role in curbing global Green House Gas emission.
In reply to a query from AL MP Anwar Hossain Khan, she said there were 40 transponders in Bangabandhu Satellite and it is hoped that $1 million to $1.25 million might be earned per year from each transponders as per the present market value.
Responding to a question of AKM Rahmatullah, the prime minister said that through observing the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujib it would be possible to spread the ideas of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the international arena.
She said that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation had decided to observe 59 proposals for 2020-21 and celebrating the birth centenary of the Sheikh Mujib is one of those.
‘They did not take the decision considering Bangabandhu as a political leader, rather they considered him as the symbol of establishing people’s rights,’ she added.
Replying to a question from ruling party MP Abdus Salam Murshedy, Sheikh Hasina said that the programmes for observing the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujib had been reduced for the sake of convenient implementation although many proposals had been received from the government and non-government organisations and individuals.
