Family plans special appeal for Khaleda’s release
The family of jailed Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday said that they were thinking about submitting special application to the government seeking her release for better and advanced treatment.
Responding to reporters after meeting her at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Khaleda’s sister Selima Islam said, ‘Her condition is very bad. She is vomiting, her left hand had bent. She is needs to be shifted elsewhere for better treatment which is not possible here.’
She said that the treatment provided by the doctors at BSMMU was not working.
Responding to another question whether they would submit any special appeal to the government for her release when her bail appeal was rejected by the apex court, Selima said, ‘We have been thinking that we would appeal. But we are yet to take decision. Her condition is very serious. If this condition continues, we will not be able to take her home alive.’
She said that Khaleda had sought blessings from the country’s people.
‘We have to arrange better treatment for her. She is groaning out of pain. Her diabetes level is 15 today after fasting. How much days will go with such situation?’ she said.
Selima said that Khaleda’s health condition was deteriorating rather than improving with the treatment by the BSMMU authorities for about one year.
‘That is why, we want to take her to an advanced hospital for her advanced treatment,’ she said.
Besides Selima, Khaleda’s brother Shamim Iskander, Shamim’s wife Kaniz Fatema and son Avik Iskander, and brother Sayeed Iskander’s wife Nasrin Iskander met the former prime minister at the hospital, BNP chairperson’s media wing member Shamsuddin Dider told New Age.
Khaleda is in jail since February 8, 2019, the day when she was sentenced by a special court in Dhaka in a graft case which BNP termed false and fabricated.
She was shifted to BSMMU on April 1, 2019 and has been undergoing treatment there since then.
The family members had earlier met Khaleda on January 5 for the last time.
On December 12, after receiving a health report submitted by the BSMMU, the Supreme Court rejected Khaleda’s bail plea and asked the university authorities to ensure her proper treatment.
On December 11, the university authorities submitted a report on Khaleda’s health to the court saying, ‘As a result of combined active diseases and accompanied damage she is, at present, at a crippled state and largely dependent on assistance for her day to day activities.’
