Ishraque wants to make Dhaka liveable, smart

Bangladesh Nationalist Party mayoral candidate for Dhaka south city elections Ishraque Hossain on Tuesday launched his election manifesto and pledged to make the city smart and liveable with special measures for conserving its heritages.

He announced his 16-point election pledges at a press conference at the National Press Club auditorium in Dhaka where central leaders of BNP, its alliance partners and Jatiya Oikya Front were present.

Reading out the manifesto, Ishraque Hossain said that the ideal Dhaka city would be a place where the city corporation would take its services to the community without any barrier and remissness.

Son of former Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Ishraque projected himself as a son of Dhaka city and wanted to introduce radical changes in the DSCC administration.

He also vowed to conduct more development programmes, conserve the heritages of the city and seek more ways to make Dhaka a smart, modern and liveable city.

‘We believe that the Awami League government had detained BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and kept his son Tarique Rahman in abroad intentionally,’ Ishaque said.

He solicited votes for waging strong movement for the unconditional release of Khaleda Zia.

He also pledged to make DSCC corruption‑free and establishing transparency and accountability of all workers.

He said measures would be taken for establishing city governments and actions plans would be taken to this end to include it in the Rajuk master plan.

Moreover, massive year-round programmes would be taken for eradication of Dengue fever and mosquito infestation, Ishraque said.

To ensure road safety and better traffic system, he pledged actions for encouraging sidewalks, foot bridges, zebra crossings and skywalks.

For reducing traffic conjunctions underground tunnel, first moving electrical bus services and smart bus stations would be introduced.

He also pledged to increase metro rail in the Old Town of Dhaka.

He wanted to improve health service, setting up primary diagnostic centres, walkways for citizens’ walking in the evening, controlling food adulterations, comprehensive reproductive health for the women, and construction of more halls for women students of universities.

‘Huge programme would be taken to control dust pollution in the Dhaka city and environmental diffusions would be controlled,’ he said.

Supply of safe drinking water for the Dhaka city dwellers would be ensured, he said, adding that the religious harmony would be maintained strictly in the city.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbus, Goyeshor Chandra Roy, Iqubal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, central leader Abdus Salam, Habib un Nabi, Jatiya Party leader Mostafa Jamal Haider, Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal-JSD president ASM Abdur Rob, Gonoshthya Kendra founding trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury, Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, academics Emajuddin Ahmed, economist Mahbubullah,  Gono Forum general secretary Reza Kibria, and its executive president Subrata Chowdhury  were also present.  

Moreover, Dhaka University professor Sadrul Amin, BNP central leaders Abdullah Al Noman, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Shama Obaid, Emran Saleh Prince and others attended the programme.

Seven candidates from different political parties are vying for the post of DSCC mayor in the February 1 city polls.
