DHAKA CITY POLLS 65pc centres risky: EC
The Election Commission has spotted 1,597 out of 2,468 polling stations of the forthcoming elections to Dhaka north and south city corporations as risky.
Voting will be held on Saturday from 8:00am to 4:00pm without any break.
Returning officers of the mayoral polls detected the risky polling stations in cooperation of the law enforcement agencies, said the returning officers.
According to the discloser, 876 polling stations out of 1,318 of DNCC and 721 of 1,150 polling stations of the DSCC spotted as risky polling station though officially the Election Commission called the risky polling stations as ‘important centre’.
As per the information, 64.70 per cent polling stations were spotted as risky. In DNCC 66.64 per cent centres are risky and in DSCC and it is 62.69 per cent in DSCC.
Returning officers for DNCC and DSCC polls Abul Kashem and Abdul Baten said that they decided to deploy six police members and two Ansar members with arms and 10 Ansar members without arms for every ‘important’ polling stations while every ‘general’ polling station will get four police members.
They said that they also decided to use closed-circuit television cameras installed by the institutions where the polling stations would be set up during the polls.
According to the commission secretariat, the commission has allocated about Tk 8.01 crore for law-enforcement agencies for their election duties.
Law-enforcement personnel would be deployed from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the police headquarters, the Special Branch and the Rapid Action Battalion.
Alongside the law enforcers, Tk 9.8 crore has been allocated for the Ansar and the Village Defence Party.
According to the commission officials, the commission prepared the list of ‘important’ and ‘general’ polling stations as per recommendations of the police and other law enforcement agencies and intelligence reports.
They said, in the police report, in most cases, the ‘important’ polling stations were earmarked after considering their nearness to the police stations as well as to the residences of candidates, especially those with criminal records.
