AL terms polls best in 100yrs

The Awami League termed Saturday’s elections to Dhaka north and south city the best in the last 100 years.

Such a free and fair election was not held in the last 100 years, one that was held on Saturday through Electronic Voting Machine to Dhaka north and south cities, joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said addressing a post-poll press conference at AL president’s Dhanmondi office.

He also thanked the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party for contesting the polls till the last moment to the Dhaka north and south city polls.

About the BNP’s hartal programme on Sunday, Hanif said that AL was to resist the programme.

He also said that the allegations raised by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were a ‘concoction’ and ‘scripted’.

On the reason behind low turnout, Hanif said that a large number of voters did not go to the polling stations as it was a public holiday and all transport movement was banned in the electoral area.

At another press conference at Awami League’s Bangabandhu Avenue Central Office in the capital, AL advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu said Dhaka city elections were held in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

BNP had raised ‘imaginary allegations’ over the city elections. But the city  dwellers delightfully participated in the two city elections. The city polls were held in a free, fair and peaceful manner, he said.
