Coronavirus outbreak BSMMU advises wearing masks, washing hands
People should wear anti-viral masks and wash hands properly to avoid coronavirus infection, said the keynote speaker of a seminar on coronavirus at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Sunday.
The speaker, researcher Sheikh Mohammad Fazle Akbar of Proteo Science Centre at Ehime University in Japan, also asked the hospital authorities to isolate patients with coronaviruses soon after the detection.
The Bangladeshi-born medical scientist also mentioned, ‘Wearing masks and washing hands will not give absolute protection against coronaviruses, but these are the two things we all can do.’
‘Contact with a patient is not necessary for the virus to spread as close proximity with a patient may suffice for the transmission of the virus through air,’ he added.
The medical university held the seminar, titled Molecular Epidemiology and Immunology of Novel Coronavirus-Hypes and Hopes, on its campus.
Vice-chancellor Professor Kanak Kanti Barua presided over the seminar, also attended by chairmen of different departments, academics and practitioners among others.
The virus claimed lives of more than 300 people since its outbreak in China in the middle of January.
The government on Saturday quarantined 312 Bangladeshis at hospitals in Dhaka on arrival from coronavirus epicentre Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei province in China.
Common signs of the infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection may cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death, according to World Health Organisation.
